A Time in History (August)

August 28, 1979

Patrick Quigley died on August 28, 1979 in Olongapo, Philippines. He was ordained in Dalgan in 1927.  In 1953 he came to the Philippines and for twenty-five years he worked in Zambales province.  At the time of his death he was assistant pastor at St. Joseph’s Parish, Olongapo City, where he was buried.  He was re-interred in St Columban’s Church, Olongapo City.

August 28, 2001

On August 28, 2001 Michael (Rufus) Halley died tragically when returning from a meeting with Muslims, he was shot by Muslim gunmen in Malabang, Lanao del Sur, Philippines.  He is buried in Cagayan de Oro City.  He worked for more than twenty years promoting Muslim-Christian dialogue in the area.  He was ordained priest in 1969 and was appointed to the Philippines (except in 1991-93 when he was in Britain) where he spent his mission life working on bringing peace to a troubled community.
