A meeting with the Mission Promotion Team and Volunteers in Mindanao was held at the Columban House, Patag, Cagayan de Oro City on June 21 and 22, 2017. It was attended by Fr.  Paul Glynn, Aurora Luceño, Irma Cantago, Louie Ybañez, Bernie Durangparang and eight committed Volunteers: Churchill Aguilar, who is now based in Butuan, Sr. Elisa Dogon of the Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Triumph of the Cross, who lives in Ozamis City, Apolinaria Neri from Bugo, Cagayan de Oro City, Vilma Arante from Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City, Vicenta Pallo from Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, Helen Raña, Jennyflor Faelden and Emily Aveyro are from Barra sub-parish, Opol, Misamis Oriental. Each volunteer has a focused area or areas. Sr. Elisa Dogon is concentrating in wider areas of the Archdiocese of Ozamiz with the help of Irma, Diocese of Pagadian with the help of Aurora and the Diocese of Iligan, covering about 900 mission partners. Apolinaria, Vilma, Vicenta, Helen, Jennyflor and Emily are the ones promoting in the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro, each one dealing with a big number of mission partners. Churchill is now concentrating in Butuan area.

The meeting tackled mainly on strategies on how to invite and expand to more Columban mission supporters and partners in the different areas in Mindanao, especially in the former Columban parishes, and on how to sustain the connection with our partners in mission. It was affirmed that one good way to maintain relationship between the Columbans and the mission partners is to provide regular formation by giving inputs, recollections and retreats, among others.

The Columban Centennial Celebration also became part of the agenda.

The second day was opened with a short recollection by Louie Ybañez. Despite the limited time, the volunteers were all delighted by the experience.

It was a successful meeting. Everyone had contributed good ideas on how they can help more as volunteers of the Columban Mission Promotion. Everyone expressed their commitment to continually support the mission. Everyone went home with joy and contentment in their hearts.

The Mission promotion team has been conducting monthly gatherings with the active mission partners in Pagadian and Ozamiz through the help of Aurora Luceño and Irma Cantago. Every month the team provides different topics that would help them know more about our ministries and mission.

As part of the intensive mission promotion, we continue doing mission appeals in masses, especially in former Columban parishes. This is a way of promoting Columban mission to the people who do not know much about Columbans and to continue the connection with those who, for many years, have known us. The following are the parishes we went to:

1. San Isidro Labrador Parish, Medina, Misamis Oriental, June 18, 2017 – The Columbans handled this parish from 1958-76.

2. San Lorenzo Ruiz Parish, Cagayan de Oro City, July 30, 2017 – The Columbans have been serving the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro from 1960s up to the present.

3. Immaculate Conception Parish, Oslob, Cebu, August 6, 2017 – At the mission-sending of Jennifer Lunor, a Columban lay missionary (PH 25)

4. San Juan Nepomuceno Parish, Moalboal, Cebu, August 6, 2017 – At the mission-sending of Lily Faunillan, a Columban lay missionary (PH 25)

There was a Columban formation program in Mabolo, Cebu City from 1984-2004.  This was the only Columban presence in Cebu.  It was only through mission-sending masses that the Columbans were given the opportunity to be introduced to the parishes where the missionaries came from, in the Archdiocese of Cebu.  This practice continues until now.

During mission appeals and mission-sending masses, we give out Columban reading materials such as newsletters, brochures, bookmarks, etc.

Every year we visit schools and continue giving out mite boxes to the students. We encourage their continual support to the mission. We already visited some schools in the Dioceses of Bukidnon and Butuan, and Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.  Sr. Elisa Dogon had given out the boxes in the Dioceses of Ozamiz, Pagadian and Iligan.

The output of mission promotion has been positive.  We received very good responses and support from our partners in mission, partner parishes and partner schools.
