Our New General Council

Fr Timothy Mulroy (Ireland), a former primary school teacher, has been Regional Director in the US for the past six years. Fr Tim was ordained at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Swinford, County Mayo, Ireland in 1995. 

His first mission assignment was in Japan and later to the US (2002) as Director of Formation at the Columban International Seminary in Chicago.  He was then elected Regional Director - USA in November 2012, a role he continued until his election as Superior General of the Society this year.

The incoming Superior General said that “As Columban missionaries look towards the future, we will continue to promote greater understanding and collaboration among people from different religious traditions. We will also continue to emphasize the importance of caring for our planet earth so that succeeding generations will enjoy God’s blessings.”



Fr Brian Gerald Vale (New Zealand), was ordained on May 17, 1975 in New Plymouth, New Zealand and was assigned to Japan in August 1976.

He did training in Spiritual Direction in Chicago in 1985-86 before being appointed to St Columban’s College, Sydney on the staff as Spiritual Director from 1986-1991.

He returned to Japan in 1992 and was appointed Regional Director 1994-2000.  He was later appointed as Superior of New Zealand Columbans at Lower Hutt 2003-2009.  In November 2017, he was appointed Regional Director for ANZ region and moved to Melbourne.



Fr Joseph Kang (Korea), Vice-Director in Korea, has been elected second councillor. He studied theology in Maynooth, Ireland and spent six years in Peru.  He was ordained priest in 2002.



Fr Alvaro Patricio Martinez Ibañez (Chile) has been elected third councillor. Fr Alvaro was ordained to the priesthood in May 2003.  He was the Regional Director in Chile from 2011 to 2017. 

He had been due to take up a new assignment in the US region but will now take up his position with the General Council in Hong Kong.
