Saint Joan of the Cross

Readings of the Day

Mt 19:13-15

Children were brought to Jesus
that he might lay his hands on them and pray.
The disciples rebuked them, but Jesus said,
"Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them;
for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
After he placed his hands on them, he went away.

Reflection

Jesus welcomed children who were without rights or status during his time.  Jesus is saying to us today that those who do not claim status and who acknowledge their dependence (not passive dependence) on the Father are the ones who can enter the Kingdom of heaven.

Children are living in the present moment; they are not distracted with worries and are able to capture and enjoy the beauty and goodness of the here and now, where God is present.
