FR. SHAUN O’DONNELL was born in Derry City, Ireland on August 2, 1937 and died in Dalgan on December 2, 2011. He joined Dalgan seminary in Ireland in 1956 and was ordained priest on December 21, 1962.

I was a pilgrim of the NYD for a reason. I believe that I have encountered Christ in the people that I met: from my delegation, to my foster family, to Team Dominic Savio and to all NYD pilgrims. The National Youth Day in Cebu is over, but the journey for young individuals like me, as servants of the Lord, has just started.

But being part of the Columban family has given me fresh eyes and a renewed sense of optimism. It’s like slowly letting the sun shine in through the window after years of being adamant in keeping them shut. Soon enough, I’d be able to stand in front of it and wave to the world outside. Despite my qualms about the Church in general, I love working in a place whose beliefs are aligned with my own. I especially enjoy being surrounded by people who challenges me to rethink my standpoint in life.

God’s presence often appears when we least we expect it. We see God in the eager face of a child who is still capable of smiling amidst his suffering. We encounter God who comes to us as a piece of bread in the mystery of the Mass, which we often ignore. We sometimes forget how to recognize the face of God, how to feel his presence. Despite all this, we should always remember that God is with us all the time.
