This year, we have the great privilege of celebrating 90 years of Columban Mission in the Philippines. On May 30, 1929 the first Columban priest to be assigned in the Philippines, Fr. Michael Cuddigan, arrived in Our Lady of Remedies Parish, Malate, Manila from Ireland.

Fr. Paul Glynn, SSC

pgOur immense gratitude to our most generous God as we recall the most joyful and grace-filled Centenary celebration of the Missionary Society of Saint Columban we had last year. Our sincerest appreciation to everyone who worked so hard throughout 2018 to ensure that we had a series of most wonderful celebrations in the dioceses and parishes where Columbans have served over the years in Luzon, Mindanao and Negros.

He was the uncle of another Columban, also named Fr. Michael Cuddigan, who worked for many years in Mindanao, Cebu and Manila before being assigned to work with the Filipino community in Hong Kong.

Many of our priests suffered great hardships at various times in our country’s history; yet God has always been faithful to us, especially during those difficult times.  But we, Columbans, have been able to continue our mission here in the Philippines for 90 years because of the tremendous friendship, encouragement and love that we have received and continue to receive from the Filipino people. It is also through the fruit of your marvellous support to our Columban Mission over the years that many young Filipinos and Filipinas have responded to the call to be Columban missionary priests and lay missionaries in so many countries around the world.

On February 16, 2019 we were blessed with the gift of another young Filipino Columban missionary priest, Fr. Louie Ybanez, SSC. He was ordained to the priesthood by the bishop of Marawi, Most Reverend Edwin de la Pena MSP DD, in Father Louie’s home parish, Holy Rosary, Agusan, Cagayan de Oro City. Father Louie will be taking up his new mission in Pakistan by September this year. Please pray for him as he responds to God’s call in this difficult mission.

To mark the 90th anniversary of our Columban presence in the Philippines there will be a Thanksgiving Mass in Our Lady of Remedies Parish, Malate on June 3, 2019 at 6pm. We are truly grateful to God and to you our supporters, our benefactors – our dear friends. Without you we would not be celebrating 90 years of mission in this most beautiful country.

Maraming, maraming salamat po sa inyong walang tigil na pagsuporta sa amin!
