Three Years of Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH)–Barra: Growing as an Ecology Parish

A collective reflection of the parishioners

Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH)–Barra marks its third year as a parish since its elevation in 2022 and its designation as an ecology parish. Looking back, parishioners recall how much has changed in a short span of time. A lot has been accomplished: the parish was able to secure land for a future parish construction, several new chapels were established, and ministries have grown both in number and in spirit. More parishioners, especially the youth, catechists, and lay leaders, have found their place in service. This sense of unity and active involvement has helped the parish community to come alive with faith.

Part of that life is rooted in the parish’s mission as an ecology parish. Caring for creation is not just a program but a way of living out the Gospel and the Laudato Si’ Movement. Over the past three years, the community has taken part in tree-growing activities, coastal and community clean-ups, and efforts to cut down on single-use plastics. Parishioners see these as small but important steps in protecting the environment and honoring the God who created it. For many, it is a reminder that faith is not confined to the walls of the church but extends to how we care for the world around us.

Alongside this mission, there have also been many blessings. The church building itself has been repaired and improved, making it more welcoming for all. Regular meetings of leaders and coordinators have strengthened communication and transparency, with the support of Rev. Fr. Enrique E. Escobar, SSC, whose presence and generosity continue to inspire the parish. Families speak with gratitude about how they have been able to support missionaries and seminarians, while chapels such as Puntacon have received practical help for their liturgical needs. These stories remind us of God’s providence at work in everyday life. As OMPH–Barra celebrates its third anniversary, the parish looks forward to more years of journeying together… growing in faith, united in service, and caring for our common home.
