Art Exhibit in Sogang University
By Fr. Jason Antiquera
Fr. Jason, from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, was ordained in 2015 and is working in Korea.
After serving in Jeju, South Korea as assistant to the parish priest, I returned to Sogang University, Seoul in June 2018 to finish my language studies. I decided to join the art club called GangMi, a play on the words “Sogang” and “Misul”, which stands for “art”. Since the university neither specializes nor offers a degree in arts, the members of the club come from various fields of studies as undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students. Despite our differences, art managed to bring us together.
During my time, I was fortunate to join the exhibits organized by the club.
(L-R): Father and Song, Inter-cultural Friendship and Gift
The first exhibit was a Six-Artist Summer Painting Exhibit that lasted for two weeks from August 13 to 29. Here, I submitted three pieces of colored pencil works entitled Father and Son, Inter-cultural Friendship and Gift. Among the participants, six of us took turns in looking after the exhibit room and serving as curators who welcomed and guided the visitors. During the winter semester, from December 8 to 12, the second exhibit took place in an open area beside a café where students came to study. There were more students involved in this exhibit. I submitted another three of my colored pencil works entitled Man of Peace: Rufus Halley, In the Eyes of a Child and Mysterious Man.

Joining the art club counts as one of the most unforgettable experiences I have during my time in Korea, because the experience fits the contemporary Columban way of doing mission: crossing culture, religion and language to share the gospel of Joy.
